About

The Dr. Reginald Mengi Foundation is proud to host the first ever, Inclusive Charity Walking Marathon (WALKATHON), to celebrate the International Disabilities Day for the year 2020. The theme for this year 2020 is “Not all Disabilities are Visible”, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others. According to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15 per cent of the world’s population, or more than 1 billion people, are living with disability. Of this number, it’s estimated 450 million are living with a mental or neurological conditions and two-thirds of these people will not seek professional medical help, largely due to stigma, discrimination and neglect. Another 69 million individuals are estimated to sustain Traumatic Brain Injuries each year worldwide, while one in 160 children are identified as on the autism spectrum.

Why walkathon

This inclusive walkathon is aimed to raise awareness and advocate on disabilities which are not visible, break the barriers to seeking help because of the social stigma, discrimination and neglect, promote physical activities for physical and mental well-being of the society, advocate for a healthy lifestyle to protect the society from the emerging lifestyle diseases which promote disabilities and promote inclusivity in the society. The inclusive walkathon will partner with different stakeholders to raise funds to;

  • Provide free counseling for mental health in five regions with high prevalence and low access.
  • Provide free counseling for learning difficulties and cognitive dysfunctions in five regions.
  • Organize health camps in remote areas to provide health education and medical checkups related to prevention of disabilities in five regions.
  • Donate mental health medications to cover 50% of 800 monthly prescriptions.
  • Donate assistive devices to children with disabilities

Stakeholders for this walkathon will include Associations of Persons with Disabilities; Umbrella organization of associations of PWD – SHIVYAWATA; Jogging clubs; Gyms ; Diet and Nutrition promoters; Tanzania Diabetes Association and the Prime Ministers Office responsible for PWD.

INCLUSIVE WALKATHONE

The inclusive walkathon will have three segments with three routes (2km route/5km route/10km route). The Participants will truly reflect the inclusivity by opening channels for children with disabilities, persons with disabilities, people with invisible disabilities, people vulnerable to disabilities, athletes, role models, pollical leaders, National leaders and the community at large.
