In celebrating the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, The Dr. Reginald Mengi Persons With Disabilities Foundation (DRMF), inaugurated the first ever “I CAN Awards” on the 3rd of December 2018.The ‘I CAN’ awards have been established by the DRMF with the objective to recognize, celebrate and honor persons with disabilities who have attained remarkable achievements and made significant contributions to the society.

The Way Forward

Due to the success of these awards and the impact they have had to the society and particularly to the community of persons with disabilities, the Foundation is working to expand the competition across Africa. The case for Africa is supported by the fact that majority of persons with disabilities live in Africa. The World Bank estimates that one billion people or 15% of the world’s population, experience some form of disability and disability prevalence is higher for developing countries. Consequently, disability is a development issue, because of its bi-directional link to poverty: disability may increase the risk of poverty, and poverty may increase the risk of disability. Africa as a Continent would benefit immensely from these awards, as they would showcase success stories of African Persons with Disabilities who have experienced similar challenges and succeeded. It will be an African story, told by an African. A critical benefit to Africa would be a change of perception to both the society and persons with disability. More opportunities will be availed by their governments, the private sector and the society in general to become independent members of the society. The awards would also open a window for wider collaboration across the continent on matters of disability, bring together more stakeholders, expand reach and breadth of disabilities campaign agenda.
